Melody Key was once owned by one of my favorite bands—311! This private offshore island wasn’t just a tropical hideout, it was seriously high tech. Even though it was completely off the grid, it had all the creature comforts: solar power, an army of batteries, a diesel generator, and its own desalination plant. You could live there like a castaway with Wi-Fi.
It’s tucked about a half-mile off Summerland Key, just 30 minutes northeast of Key West. While I was there to shoot real estate (not rock out), it was hard not to imagine what kind of wild concerts and epic parties might’ve gone down when the band owned the place.
