Zion Primitive Baptist Church, Key West

Zion Primitive Baptist Church

Originally built in 1867 by formerly enslaved people, Zion Primitive Baptist Church has stood through generations of change. After a fire, it was rebuilt in 1911, and for decades it served as a spiritual and community anchor for the African American population in the area. The congregation eventually disbanded in the 1970s, and in 1983, the church was converted into a private home.

Even with its new role, the building still wears its past proudly. The pointed arch windows, corner steeple, and double-door entrance all point to its Carpenter Gothic roots. You can almost imagine what Sunday mornings sounded like inside.

Today, it’s a home—but one with stories in its walls and a strong sense of place that hasn’t faded.
