One of my favorite projects to date was shooting an island approximately 9 miles west of Key West. The 26 acre island had a Sheffield Steel main house with an additional guest house which was a residence for the property manager plus a beached houseboat. Back then we had no photo drones, so it was off to Key West Airport for a quick flight over there, taking photos along the way. After a quick walk through the helicopter pilot flew back to Key West leaving me behind to work my magic. After a few hours on site the property manager met me at the dock for a 20 minute boat ride back to the port of Key West.
Ballast Key had a cameo appearance in the Bond movie License to Kill and Mr. Key West hosted several celebrities their over the years, including Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, the Bee Gees, Gloria Estefan and an occasional Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Mellon and Duke.
Mr Key West ultimately donated the property to The Nature Conservancy, who deeded ownership to US Fish and Wildlife Service, while arranging to manage the resource.
